This years annual Ash Parish Fun Day was held on
Saturday 25th July 2009. Once again the fun and games took place
at the Ash Centre and on the adjacent recreation ground. The overall
event being organised by the staff of Ash Parish Council.
The weather was very kind to us this year and although
the sky was not cloudless throughout we did enjoy a good amount
of sunshine during the afternoon.
The days events got under way with the judging
of the flower, fruit, vegetable, flower arranging, baking and craft
competitions. The number of entries were disapointing this year
as they were down on last year. For a list of class winners click
here. Class Winners.
The Class winners, together with the second and
third placed entries all received their certificates from Councillor
Nigel Manning during the afternoon.
The Fun Day was officially opened by the Mayor
of Guildford, Councillor Pauline Searle and Chairman of Ash Parish
Council, Councillor Nigel Manning.
Following the official opening, the arena displays
started with a brand new performance for Fun Day, the Cadence Guildford
Drum and Bugle Corps. The Corps, whose youngest member was just
7 years of age, performed two displays during the afternoon.
Another new act for the Fun Day was a demonstration
by the Tokon Shotokan Karate Academy led by Jana Gee. Jana won the
JSKA Ladies World Kumite Championship for 2006 in New York.
The demonstration started with a few basic Karate
principles and gradually built up to the more advance techniques.
This years finale was yet another new act for Fun
Day and this was a spectacular flying display by Eagle Owl, Honey
and Peregrine Falcon, Bob from the Henfold Birds of Prey Centre.
The Birds were abley assisted by Barry and Nicola
from the Birds of Prey Centre. Ash Parish Council would like to
sincerely thank the Centre who stepped in to provide both a static
and the very dramatic flying display at the very last minute. We
would also like to thank all the children who braved Honey's talons
during the display.
Once again The Frimley Park Hospital Outside Broadcast
Unit, led by Kieran Cooke and Terry Joy, performed a magnificent
job of compering the main arena events and Ash Parish Council would
like to thank them accordingly.
Whilst the arena events were underway there were
over 30 different stalls and stands representing various charities
and local groups from in and around the village. These stalls included
the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice, Ash U3A, Ash Grange Childrens Centre
and the Ash Garden Club to name but a few.
Rounding off the entertainment other attractions
included a children's mini fun fair, a burger bar, ice cream van,
and of course the beer tent supplied by FM Bars.
Just after 5 o'clock, Councillor Nigel Manning
officially closed the event. Nigel thanked all participants for
taking part and the Parish Council Staff led by Clerk of the Council,
Carole Olive for organising the event.
Finally with the 2009 Fun Day now over the council
staff can take a small break before beginning preperations for Ash
Fun Day 2010. Please remember to keep returning to the Ash Parish
Council Web Site for details of the 2010 event.
