Effect on Unpowered Boats (e.g canoes/kayaks/paddleboards: | Navigation open – advisory note: Persons in unpowered boats are advised that some oil residues may be present in the area downstream of Lock 7. If exposed skin is in contact with the water they should wash in warm soapy water as soon as possible afterwards, and before eating or drinking. |
Full Update: | The diesel spillage reported on 28/7 downstream of Lock 7 has been cleaned up with the majority of diesel fuel removed by BCA staff, as advised by the EA. This has allowed the navigation to reopen to powered craft. Small residues of diesel fuel are still present, however, especially in amongst reeds at the side of the waterway. Pet owners are still advised to keep their dogs from swimming in the Canal in this area. Persons in canoes, kayaks, etc are advised to avoid getting water on exposed skin, or if this is unavoidable to wash in warm soapy water as soon as possible afterwards, and before eating, drinking or smoking/vaping to avoid any risk of ingestion. In the event of any skin reaction or feeling unwell after boating in this area – seek medical advice. |
