Guildford Borough Council : Guildford Lido Unveils Modernised Changing Facilities and Celebrates 90th Birthday
We’re set to open our new state-of-the-art changing facilities at The Guildford Lido. This transformation coincides with the Lido’s 90th birthday, celebrated last week on 21 June. Marking almost a century of exceptional leisure experiences for the community, it’s now even better. The Guildford Lido, located in Stoke Park, is a popular venue with an outdoor swimming pool, paddling pool, slides and a small gym. Each year, around 80,000 people visit the Lido, and on busy days, there can be up to 2,500 visitors. It has just undergone a £2.1million refurbishment. The improvements include: larger toilet and changing cubicles to meet current standards and provide ample space, privacy, and comfort during changing disabled toilets, showers and changing facilities; including ambulant disabled facilities. family changing spaces increased provision of toilets, showers, and wash basins A new poolside catering offer, which Freedom Leisure will be fitting out and opening in due course Freedom Leisure operates the Lido on our behalf. They’ll be responsible for managing the upgraded facility. Freedom Leisure said: “We’re delighted that the new changing rooms at Guildford Lido are now open. These new facilities will provide a modern and welcoming space for swimmers of all ages to enjoy. “The original changing rooms served the community well for the last 90 years. We hope the new state of the art facilities will be enjoyed by many future generations to come.” Lead Councillor for Commercial Development, Cllr Catherine Houston, said: “What better way to celebrate the Lido’s 90th birthday than by unveiling its much needed make-over? “Our commitment is to provide exceptional experiences for our visitors. This is at the heart of our decision to upgrade our facilities at the Lido. When the original 1930’s drainage system needed replacing, we saw an incredible opportunity to modernise the facilities. We had to fix the drainage system to keep the venue operational. As the changing rooms sat above the failed drainage system, we seized the chance to make much needed improvements for our visitors.” “Inclusivity has been the priority here. We want to better cater to the needs of our visitors, offering improved accessibility, comfort, and convenience. We’ve done this by creating a more welcoming and inclusive environment for all. “A lot of careful thought has gone into future-proofing this upgrade to ensure the buildings are less maintenance intensive. More importantly, careful consideration has been made in the design to optimise the use of natural light and ventilation, creating a more environmentally-friendly facility, whilst also incorporating technologies which will reduce energy and water usage. “We all have such fond memories of visiting the Lido, in our childhood or with our families. I look forward to so many more being made. By enhancing this local gem we protect these delightful experiences yet to be had. “We are grateful to everyone who has worked with us on this project for your invaluable contributions. I’d also like to share our thanks with our visitors, for their continued patience and support.” About Guildford Lido Guildford Lido is a renowned leisure destination situated within Stoke Park.
