Guildford Borough Council : Our Car Free Day Town Centre Event Returns For 2022

Guildford Borough Council : Our Car Free Day Town Centre Event Returns For 2022

On Sunday 25 September we will put pedestrians first for ‘Car Free Day 2022’. We are transforming our town centre again for a day of celebrations and free family fun.

More than 24,000 residents and visitors joined us for the launch event in 2021.

We will have market stalls, street food, live music and street performances from local groups. There will also be street play areas for children, plus lots more for families.

Last year you told us how we could improve the event. We listened. This year, we are working with even more partners to help our residents step up their actions to tackle climate change.

We have also made the event bigger so there is more space for activities and people.

Ward Councillor for Holy Trinity, Cllr Maddy Redpath said:

“I am so pleased to see the return of Car Free Day. This event proved really popular in 2021. Now we are looking forward to working with even more partners this year to make the day bigger and better.

We intend to build on the success of last year and transform our town into a car free zone. This will offer a unique day out for visitors to Guildford.

Businesses will be encouraged to make use of the extra space created. Local groups will be able to engage with the public through stalls, music and entertainment. Once again, our residents will get the chance to re-imagine the town opened up to more pedestrians. To visualise the possibilities of a more pedestrianised and cycle friendly town.”

Lead Councillor for Climate Change, Cllr Cait Taylor said:

“We are fully committed to supporting our residents in the fight to tackle climate change. We realise this one day town centre event won’t fix all the environmental challenges we face. But it’s another step towards finding some solutions. Car Free Day will encourage people to leave their car at home and travel into town in other ways. It will also provide the opportunity to learn about active travel and sustainable living. This will undoubtedly have a positive effect on both our health and the environment.”  Car Free Day gives everyone a chance to have fun and celebrate in our town centre without the cars. It gives you the chance to see how our town centre could look in the future.
