Guildford Borough Council : Register To Vote In The Annual Canvass 2023

Guildford Borough Council : Register To Vote In The Annual Canvass 2023

We are appealing to residents to check their electoral registration details are up to date.  It’s important that everyone who’s eligible to vote can do so. Surrey Police and Crime Commissioner elections are scheduled for next May and a general election is due by January 2025. You can only vote in elections if you are registered.

From 4 August we’ll start emailing or writing to every household in the Guildford area. By law everyone needs to check that the registration details we hold are accurate and up to date. This is known as the Annual Canvass. It allows us to:

  • keep the electoral register up to date
  • identify who risks losing their voice at elections
  • encourage residents to register before it’s too late

In particular, we want potential first-time voters to be aware of their right to register. 16-to 17-year-olds can register to vote ahead of their 18th birthday. Students who have moved to our area are permitted to register at both their term time and home address. They can then choose which constituency or voting area they vote in.

Electoral Registration Officer, Tom Horwood, said:

“Keep an eye out for important updates from us. We may contact residents by post or email. Always check that emails come from a legitimate email address that includes ‘.gov.uk’.

“The quickest and easiest way to register is online, but you can use the paper forms we send out too.

“Responding as soon as you’re contacted will save taxpayer’s money and ensure we don’t need to visit your home.”

More information on registering to vote is available on the Electoral Commission website.
