Guildford Borough Council announces a review of polling districts and polling places

Guildford Borough Council is reviewing all the polling districts and places used at elections to take account of new division boundaries. The new division arrangements will come into force for the County Council Elections to be held on Thursday 1 May 2025.

The purpose of this review is to consider polling arrangements in each of the electoral divisions and to recommend changes to existing arrangements if they are needed.

The County Council electoral divisions in Guildford are:

  • Ash
  • Guildford East
  • Guildford North
  • Guildford South East
  • Guildford South West
  • Guildford West
  • Horsleys
  • Shalford
  • Shere
  • Worplesdon

Who can get involved

The council welcomes representations and views from any interested party wishing to comment on:

  • polling districts
  • polling places

Comments are also welcomed from any interested person registered as an elector within either:

  • the council area
  • a UK parliamentary constituency which has any part within the council area

How people can get involved

All information about the review and the Returning Officer’s proposals are on the council’s website. Representations can be made from 9 December to 10 January 2025:

If people believe a current polling place is unsuitable, the council asks for suggestions of alternative venues.

Accessibility is really important

The Council is committed to taking reasonable and practicable steps to ensure every polling station is accessible to electors with disabilities.

It’s vital that residents with disabilities make their views known. Representations from organisations or those with expertise in access for people with disabilities are also welcomed.

What happens next?

All proposals and any comments received must be published. They will be published on the council’s website throughout the review.

The proposals and all representations will also be available for inspection at Guildford Borough Council’s Millmead Office. People must make an appointment with Electoral Services to come in between these times:

  • 08:45 to 16:45 from Monday to Thursday
  • 08:45 to 16:00 on Fridays

Final proposals will go to Full Council on 24 February 2025 for a formal decision. Those individuals registered to vote will be informed of any changes in their area in March 2025.

Notes to Editors

Susan Sale is the (Acting) Returning Officer for the Guildford Parliamentary Constituency and Returning Officer for Local Government Elections.

Notice is given under section 18 C of the Representation of the People Act 1983 (as amended), to the commencement of a review into polling districts and polling places for the new division arrangements that come into force for the County Council Elections to be held on Thursday 1 May 2025.

Reason for the Polling District and Polling Places Review

The council is required to carry out a review of polling districts and polling places at least once every five years.

The last full review of Guildford’s polling districts and polling places was carried out in 2023 due to the parliamentary constituency changes.

This interim review is being conducted due to electoral division changes following the LGBCE’s review of Surrey County Council’s electoral divisions.
