Guildford Borough Council unveils bold Housing Strategies to tackle homelessness and improve housing

Guildford Borough Council has taken a significant step forward in its commitment to continued housing improvement with the approval of two key strategies:

  • The Housing Strategy 2025–2034
  • The Homelessness Prevention and Rough Sleeping Strategy 2025–2034

These newly endorsed strategies outline the Council’s vision and priorities for housing across the borough and form a core part of its Housing Improvement Plan, designed to align services with the Corporate Strategy 2024–2034.

A commitment to positive change

The Council’s approach reflects its dedication to:

  • Enhancing housing options for all residents
  • Supporting vulnerable individuals to access safe and suitable housing
  • Preventing homelessness through forward-thinking initiatives
  • Reducing rough sleeping via proactive, collaborative, and person-centred solutions

What’s next?

With the strategies now approved, Guildford Borough Council will begin implementation. Councillor Julia McShane, Lead Councillor for Housing, confirmed the Council’s commitment to their housing service, stating:

“Service leaders will now be discussing both strategies and action plans with their teams as they look to bring together the work we already do with our aspiration to deliver even better services to our residents. We hope this marks the beginning of greater innovation and improvement.”

Expressing gratitude to everyone who contributed to shaping these strategies, Councillor McShane added:

“Your input has been invaluable in setting a clear, ambitious direction for our housing and homelessness services. We remain focused on continuous improvement, ensuring that residents remain at the heart of everything we do.”

Looking Ahead

The Council remains steadfast in its mission to create an inclusive, welcoming community, where everyone has access to decent homes they can afford.

Updates on the progress of these strategies will be shared with teams, partners, and residents as implementation moves forward.

More information on these and other housing strategies is detailed on the Council website.

EDITORS NOTES:

Both housing strategies were developed following extensive engagement with stakeholders, partners, and the public. They align closely with our wider corporate priorities and national policy.

These strategies support the Council’s ongoing improvement efforts as detailed in the Councils Improvement Plan.
