Crowdfund Guildford helps local hospice project

Crowdfund Guildford helps local hospice project

A new hospice development is the latest project to receive funding from Guildford Borough Council’s Crowdfund Guildford initiative.

Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice Care is set to replace its building in Farnham with a larger, more modern facility. Following a successful fundraising campaign through Crowdfund Guildford, Phyllis Tuckwell will now receive funding of £25,000 from the Council’s Community Infrastructure Fund to help fit-out ensuite bedrooms in the new flagship In-Patient Unit.

Cllr Julia McShane, Leader of the Council, says: “Crowdfund Guildford can help community projects to get the funding they need, and gain strong local support along the way. The initiative supports small community schemes, or larger capital projects such as the Phyllis Tuckwell development. It really is the best way for local people to get our support for the ideas that matter in our community.

“Phyllis Tuckwell provides vital support for our residents in Guildford and those in the wider area, and it’s great news that Crowdfund Guildford funding will help them to continue providing care long into the future.”

A total of 27 backers pledged money to the Phyllis Tuckwell Crowdfund Guildford campaign, helping them to reach their fundraising target and show local support for their project. The pledges will be added to the Council funding to provide a total of £52,335 to Phyllis Tuckwell.

Jenny Peat, Director of Income Generation at Phyllis Tuckwell, says: “We are so grateful for the support given by Guildford Borough Council and their Crowdfund Guildford initiative. This funding will help us to build a new facility that is fit for the future, helping tens of thousands of people across Surrey in the years to come.”

Crowdfund Guildford funding is supported by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. The initiative is open to projects based in Guildford and those that support residents in the borough. There are two funding options:

  • standard funding of up to £5,000 for small projects
  • large capital funding of up to £25,000 to support big ideas

The Spring round of Crowdfund Guildford funding is now open. The deadline for project submissions is Wednesday 12 March.

Cllr Carla Morson, Lead Councillor for Community and Organisational Development adds: “We want to fund projects that help vulnerable groups, make rural areas better, improve green spaces, encourage people to enjoy nature and improve wellbeing. We also encourage schools and Parish Councils to apply for funding to help bring their community ideas to life.”

Notes to Editors

Crowdfund Guildford:

How local fundraisers can apply:

By joining Crowdfund Guildford, local people can:

  • get strong and local support for their project
  • access important funds that make their idea happen
  • get our support to help make their community better.

With a total of £100,000 available funding in the 2024-25 rounds, Crowdfund Guildford provides strong support for community-driven change. Funding will be given based on the projects that show they’re needed and supported by the community. So, it’s essential the fundraisers demonstrate how the project will make a difference to local people.

Crowdfund Guildford funding is supported by the UK Share Prosperity Fund. Funding is available as part of the total allocation for 2024-25.

Spacehive is a funding platform for ideas that bring local civic and community spaces to life. Its vision is a world where anyone can shape their local area to create places that make people happy, proud, and prosperous. Find more information about Spacehive.

The platform pools together funds between councils, businesses, foundations and the local community to pay for projects that improve local places, which typically results in projects securing three times more funding than if they were relying on council funds alone. Projects can range from building a new community centre or improving the local park, to improving a playground or putting on a street festival.

From Phyllis Tuckwell:

Phyllis Tuckwell provides palliative and end of life care for adult patients and families living with an advanced or terminal illness (such as cancer, heart, lung or neurological disease) in West Surrey and North-East Hampshire, an area of 550,000 residents.

Every day we support over 250 patients, relatives and carers, through a mix of medical and nursing care, therapies, counselling, social work advice and practical support. We are currently building a new state-of-the-art Hospice on our existing site in Farnham, which will enable us to care for more people who need our support. During the project, we are continuing to offer our specialist services, from alternative locations. Our In-Patient Unit is temporarily located in a care home in Camberley; our community support is being delivered by our Hospice at Home team for patients, families and carers at home; and our Living Well sessions and outpatient appointments will continue to run at the Beacon Centre in Guildford. Our support staff are located at a temporary office facility in Farnham for the duration of the build.

The NHS/Government only cover 25% of our costs, so we have to raise over £25,000 every single day to be able to offer all our services, free of charge, to our patients and their families and carers. We therefore rely heavily on the support and generosity of our local community.
